Details of the incident:
On 10th December, Gitaben fell unconscious at 11 PM at her home after returning from her sister’s place in Surat. She was immediately admitted to Aysuh ICU and Multispecialty hospital under the supervision of Dr.Arvind Godiwala. After CT Scan, Doctor found blood clot in brain and brain hemorrhage. For further opinion she was consulted by Neurophysician Dr.Bhadresh Mangukiya who suggested for an operation. Based on Dr.Mangukiya’s opinion, she was shifted to Mahavir Trauma hospital on 12 December under supervision of Neurosurgeon Dr. Hasmukh Sojitra where she was operated. With few days of recovery, she again fell unconscious and hence this time she was taken to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. There she was consulted by Dr.Abhay Kumar who opined to take her back to Surat as she had a severe brain damage. Keeping hope in the heart, her family member took her back to Surat and admitted to Ashutosh Hospital under supervision of Dr.Kamlesh Doshi on 26 December. On 27 December 2016, she was declared brain dead by Neurophysician Dr. Bhadresh Mangukiya and on 29 December by Neurophysician Dr.Paresh Zanzmera.
Dr.Ketan Desai from Ashutosh Hospital then called Donate Life President Nileshbhai Mandlewala to inform him about Gitaben’s case. Team Donate Life rushed to the hospital to start with the counseling session with Gitaben’s family members along with Gitaben’s family friend Shri Navalbhai Khoont. Family members consciously decided to donate the organs so as to give new lives to many. Hence, the President of Donate Life, Shri Nileshbhai, called coordinator Priyaben Shah and Dr.Pranjal Modi from Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad and requested them to accept the donation of the 2 kidneys and liver. Dr.Suresh Kumar and his team rushed from IKDRC and accepted donation of two kidneys and liver.
One kidney was transplanted into Kanak Verma (age 51) living in Ahmedabad. Another kidney was transplanted into Ashok Patel (age 46) living in Maansa and Liver was transplanted into Aniruddh Joshi (age 45) living in Halvad. The transplant of kidneys and liver were completed at IKDRC by Dr.Pranjal Modi, Dr.Jamal Rizvi and their team.
Lt. Gitaben is our hero and her family members are our heroes as well as they all agreed for cadaver organ donation. We salute Lt.Gitaben and her family members. We are thankful to Hospitals, doctors and all the staff members of the hospitals for spreading awareness of cadaver organ donation and helping us saving more lives.
From Surat and rest of South Gujarat region, till date, Shri Nilesh Mandlewala and Donate Life has received donation of 180 kidneys, 66 livers, 4 pancreases, 7 hearts, and 156 eyes which helped 412 people to get a new life.
One need to note that in the year of 2016, total 100 cadaveric kidney transplant took place out of which 45 cadaveric kidneys were donated by Donate Life from Surat.
