On Saturday 8th March 2018, Ramadevi was going to take a bath after completing the last rituals of her mother-in-law and suddenly got unconscious. She was immediately admitted to Mahavir Trauma Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Manek Asawani at 11:30 AM. After CT scan, doctors found a Brain Hemorrhage and blood clot in the brain. Later, she was operated by Neuro Surgeon Dr. Aashit Desai to remove the blood clot from her brain by craniotomy. On 16th March, Ramadevi was declared brain dead by Neuro Physician Dr. Paresh Zanzmera and Dr. Ravi Vatiyani.
Ramdevi’s brother-in-law Rajesh Kavadiya informed Donate Life President Nilesh Mandlewala and gave the information about her brain dead. The team of Donate Life reached the hospital and explained the importance and procedure of Organ Donation to her husband Kantilal, Sons Kirtikumar and Lokeshkumar, Daughters Bhavna, Chandan and Minakshi, Son-in-Law Vimal and Ajay along with Rajesh.
Family members of Ramadevi said, “Our mother was a kind donor and religious. She often read news about the organ donation in newspapers and always insisted to donate her organs to organ failure patients after her death. So today when our mother is brain dead and is going to die soon, it is better to donate her precious organs and save the lives of needy people rather than burning her organ to ashes.”
On getting the consent from Ramadevi’s family members, Donate Life Founder President Nilesh Mandlewala contacted Dr. Pranjal Modi at Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad and informed him to accept the donation of kidney and liver. The donation of kidney and liver were accepted by Dr. Suresh Kumar and his team from Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad. Whereas, the donation of eyes was accepted by Lokdrashti Chakshu Bank’s Dr. Praful Shiroya.
Out of two donated kidneys, one was transplanted into Sagar Jayendra Obhliya (Age: 38) living in Surat and another was transplanted into Sunita Arun Sharma (Age: 47) living in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. Whereas, the liver was transplanted into Yogesh Dhirubhai Dhobi (Age 48) living in Borsad. The process of organ transplantation was done by Dr. Pranjal Modi, Dr. Jamal Rizvi and their team from Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC).
This whole process of organ donation witnessed an invaluable co-operation of Ramadevi’s husband Kantilal, Sons Kirtikumar and Lokeshkumar, Daughters Bhavna, Chandan, Minakshi, Son-in-Law Manoj, Vimal, Ajay and other family members, Neuro Physician Dr. Paresh Zanzmera, Dr. Ravi Vatiyani, Physician Dr. Manek Asava, Administrators & Staff members of Mahavir Trauma Hospital, President of Donate Life Nilesh Mandlewala, Secretary Rakesh Jain, Hemant Desai and Subhash Jodhani.
So far, the team of Donate Life has given new life to 572 people by playing an instrumental role in donating 245 kidneys, 99 livers, 6 pancreas, 17 hearts and 208 eyes by providing counseling to the family members of brain dead persons.
